At the invitation of IEAS, Dean YU Xiaoping, Professor FENG Jinjiang and Professor WANG Li visited IEAS and School of Oriental Languages and Culture of Zhejiang Gongshang University on 28 December 2017.
As guests of East Asian Culture Forum of IEAS, Dean Professor Feng and Professor Wang delivered lectures on Translation Skills and Significance, and Blue and White Porcelain in Sino-Japanese Cultural Exchange respectively.
Ceramics has been used in ancient Chinese culture and has shaped the way Chinese live our lives today. Translation is a means for the dissemination of Chinese ceramic culture. Porcelain is made from white clay that is shaped on the wheel. Then glazes were applied to create a glossy appearance. Dean Professor Feng explained all these in an interesting way. He combined Chinese ceramic culture with his practical experience to point out that translation in ceramic culture was an art showing pertinent and obvious implication for folklore. He cited examples and observations to show how translation of folklore implications could help infatuation to Chinese ceramics as hurricane of Chinese culture. Professor Wang presented the historical artistic development of blue and white porcelain of superb technical quality in Jingdezhen, Kangxi. He also shared his research findings of Japanese pottery and porcelain ( tojiki ) as one the oldest Japanese crafts and art form. He opined that Japan had a thriving tradition of high-quality ceramics.
Through academic exchange between Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute and IEAS, these two institutions have close co-operation for further development. As a vibrant institution in East Asian studies, IEAS establishes and maintains long-term co-operation with our partners on a number of different levels, including research, cultural and educational.
