5 May 2016: Seminar of Mr Xu Bo at IEAS under the sponsorship of Asia One Foundation

A Dream of the Red Chamber (红楼梦), also known as The Story of the Stone, has all along been recognized as one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. This Chinese Romeo-and-Juliet love story written by Cao Xueqin( 曹雪芹 ) enjoys a respectable status worldwide, comparable to the plays of William Shakespeare. Apart from its unique literary style written in Beijing vernacular with many profound upper class expressions and allusions, this gem of Chinese literature is regarded as the best starting point for a sociocultural understanding of Chinese society. This Chinese Romeo-and-Juliet love story was left unfinished by Cao Xueqin at his death in 1763. Twenty-nine years later, it was eventually published in 1792 with an added conclusion attributed to the Qing Dynasty scholar Gao E (高鹗 c. 1738 – c.1815)In A Dream of the Red Chamber, there are many meticulous portrayals of luxury articles imported from Europe and Southeast Asia for the conspicuous consumption during the life and declining fortunes of a large feudal family. Under the sponsorship of Asia One Foundation (ワンアジア財団), Mr Xu Bo(徐波), the chief editor of World Affairs (世界知识) magazine, gave a talk on "Foreign Articles and Their Stories in A Dream of Red Chamber" (《红楼梦》中的外国物品和故事 ) at IEAS on 4 May 2016. With the explanation of Mr Xu Bo, professors and students of IEAS further understood and appreciated the artistic achievement of this gem of Chinese literature.
