12 September 2017 : Conference of Cultural Exchanges at Sea
From 1 to 4 September 2017, IEAS successfully held the Conference of Japanese Studies in East Asian Perspective with Focus on Exchanges at Sea as the theme of the Japanese Culture and History Workshop for University Teacher this year. With the support of Japan Foundation, this year is the tenth anniversary of this workshop jointly organized by IEAS and Institute of Japanese Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The overall academic level of Japanese studies is thereby enhanced. The workshop was divided into two thematic parts. The first part was the Conference of Japanese Studies in East Asian Perspective with Focus on Exchanges at Sea, in which scholars from Tokyo University, Waseda University and Ulsan University, Zhejiang University and Chinese Society of Maritime History presented their cutting edge research papers. Professor HOYA Toru of Tokyo University used brand new research method of high resolution optical imaging technologies of microscopy for the analysis of photos, leading participants to a new academic world. Professor Wang Yong presented Bitan and Antiphony in Wanli Choson War, giving new interpretation to the bitan manuscripts of Ming Dynasty envoys during Imjin Waeran ( Japanese Invasion in 1594). Professor NO Sung Hwan of Ulsan University presented his research findings of the historical information on Choson Prince Silla adrift on the sea, which was discovered from his field trips in Wenzhou region. In the perspective of folklore, he presented his viewpoint of dissemination of Chinese culture. Professor MATSUURA Akira of Kansai University quoted sea drifter in Edo period to illustrate their knowledge about the otherness of foreigners. Other scholars who presented their research papers included Professor Chen Xiaofe of IEAS, Professor LI Lei of East China Normal University and Professor WU Zhengtao of Kansai University.


The second part was the forum on planning similar event in future and development program. Mr NOGUTI Fukusyunin and Mr HUANG Haicun of Beijing Office of Japan Foundation, and Professor Wang Yong of IEAS actively presented their suggestions and viewpoints. Professor GAO Ping of Taizhou University hosted the closing ceremony.
