Incentive Award for East Asian Studies

Institute of East Asian Studies of Zhejiang Gongshang University builds reputation for academic excellence under the guiding principles of Chinese culture as fountainhead, Sinology as basis, comparative study as methodology and national interest as kernel. Our grand pioneering innovative academic thoughts include Book Road and East Asian Chinese classics. Our professional work directly contributes to the generation and dissemination of knowledge in such academic domains as ancient Chinese classics outside China and bitan in East Asia, thereby taking a lead in Chinese and international academia.

In 2015, Dean Professor Wang Yong was presented The Japan Foundation Awards for his extant theoretical constructions of East Asian studies such as Book Road. Other two Chinese recipients Xia Yan and Sun Pinghua were previously presented the awards in 1988 and 1997 respectively for their demonstrable impact on promoting international mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and China through academic, artistic and cultural pursuit.

During the presentation ceremony of this award, Dean Professor Wang Yong expressed his intention to share the honor with academia. In April 2017, he donated part of the cash prize to Waseda University for setting up Incentive Payment for Academic Research. Recently, he donated 1,000,000 Japanese Yen from the cash prize to create Incentive Award for East Asian Studies ( hereunder the Award).

In order to respect Dean Professor Wang Yong’s aspiration and throw out a minnow to catch a whale, the name of Dean Professor Wang Yong is not considered for the naming of the Award. We look forward to support inside and outside Zhejiang Gongshang University and the favorable response from our Chinese and international counterparts. For the reserve forces of East Asian studies, maintenance of good momentum of our University in East Asian studies and acceleration of further development of East Asian studies in China, we believe we should contribute our meager ability.
